Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, majority of the world has been stuck in their houses for a month or so, and it has immensely benefited the Earth.
Sources such as CNN, Fox News, National Geographic, and many more have expressed that the world is seeing a great reduction of air pollution during the practice of social distancing.
Air pollution is one of the most destructive forms of pollution as it contaminates and harms all life forms. From humans, to animals, and even plants, are affected by the severe damages caused by air pollution. One of the major negative effects that air pollution has on Earth, is that it deteriorates the ozone layer that protects our planet. Also, it is the leading cause for respiratory and heart issues in human health.
However, because of stay-at-home orders throughout the world, there are far less factories and transportation vehicles operating, allowing the skies to clear.
Transportation vehicles are responsible for a major portion of air pollution as they omit toxic nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide emissions into the atmosphere, contaminating the air we breathe.
Places like China, India, and Los Angeles, California have been able to see changes in the air due to far less car traffic. Yet, the air isn’t the only thing clearing up. There has been several reports and videos of Venice, Italy’s canals clearing up due to reduction of air pollution and human contamination.
In other words, there should be some sort of world-wide lock down where humans aren’t able to leave their homes for at least two weeks every three months in order to reduce pollution. It is bad enough that majority of the human species recognizes global warming and pollution as a serious issue, but simply choose not to do anything about it. So, why not give people two weeks of paid leave to stay home and allow the Earth to take a break from human contamination?
